THE COLOR PURPLE
By Alice Walker Summary
The color purple is a novel about a
little black American woman named Celie, setting in the early 1990s which
describes some issues that afro- American people (especially women) lived in
the south of Unites State in this period; these issues were poverty, racism,
sexual abuse and ignorance, this story focused in Celie and all the bad things
that she suffered by her father, husband, step-son and all the society. This
story show a critical period where black American were threaten very bad, they
were oppressive by the white men who used to feel superior than Black people,
in this condition the black American women were more abused even by black men, they believed that women were
born to supply men. This novel
describes America as a racism culture which the white men feel more important
that others people.
In addition, in this
story we can be seen that Celia used to the abuse by men, this was a very male
dominated society in which women were seen as inferior and destined to serve
man, but through story Celie was emancipating with the help of Sofia she was opening his mind and creating
an emotional and personal
connection with her new friend
which helped her vent
and to understand that his freedom
in her power and not the decisions of others.
The first
part of this work focuses on the abuses suffered by young black women who were
virtually enslaved by men,
due to ignorance, lack of education and self-esteem of these women. Also the
reality of Southern of North
America was quite rue for African Americans, which were treated as less American and they had many shortcomings and fewer opportunities for advancement, it was a ignorant and racist reality that unfortunately at present remains.
In conclusion,
this work allows us to reflect on the importance of education as a means to abolish ignorance
and abuse, if Celie had been educated at
school and at home about respect
for the human condition, self-esteem
and if she had initiated affective relationships when she was a child Celie would have been more able to prevent
abuses suffered all her life.
