Learning about central vowels

 

As we can see in the previous post the vowels have some characteristic that we can use to know how are theirs correct pronunciation, according with a certain distinctive element. In the same case of front vowels, central vowels are determined for these elements:

 

Ø  according to the position of the main part of the tongue: front, central and back.

Ø  the height of the vowel: heigh, mid and low.

Ø  All vowel sounds are voiced.

Ø  The vowels are tense or lax.

Ø  The vowels are round or non-round. 

 

Central vowels

 

It is a vowel sound that is used in some spoken languages.

The back vowels get their name because they are produced in the middle of the mouth.

All central vowels are produced between front and back vowels.

 the tongue is positioned intermediate among front vowels and back vowels

in addition thay are known as a mixes wovels.

it can be difficult to teach and learn the different between cenrtral vowels (specially to studenst that learn second language because the vowels are very similiars in the sounds.


There are three central vowels:

[ɝ]  [л]  [ə]

 

[ɝ]



Description: High-mid, tense, central, round and voiced vowel. This only occurs in stressed syllables; it is produced to emphasis.

  

Articulation: Lips are rounded, tongue located high-mid and central position, length long.

 

Example: person, stair, , turn, learn.

 

Description: High-mind, tense, central, round and voiced vowel. Length long

 

Articulation: Lips are rounded, tongue located high-mid and central position, length long.

 

Example: born, stair, , turn, learn.

 

[л]

Description: open- mind, tense, central, round and voiced vowel.

 

Articulation: Lips are unrounded, tongue located high-mid and central position, length long. tongue is positioned intermediate between an open or low vowel.

 

Example: up, double, hut, nothing. Cult

 

 

[ə]

 

Description: ,  mid-central vowel, central, unround. The tongue is in a middle position, also it is called schwa. This vowel occurs in short and unstressed syllables. It is a reduced or neutral vowel.

  

Articulation: Lips are unrounded, tongue located mid and central position. tongue is positioned central mid close to low position.

 

Example: up, double, hut, nothing. Cult.
